IRS Email Scam

Always remember that the IRS will never contact you by email unless you contact them first!

A recent email that had been received from a taxpayer looks very official but did not come from the IRS.

The IRS logo and standard IRS letter format make the email look real at first glance but there are several problems with it. First, there is no other IRS website besides irs.gov and this email comes from irssup.gov.

There are also several spelling errors and the IRS would never send anything out unedited.

Lastly, the header next to the logo reads Internal Revenue Source not Internal Revenue Service.

Always take a close look if an email looks suspicious, and never click on a link from an unfamiliar email address. The email’s link contained a virus that could have been destructive to a computer.

If you ever receive a notice from the IRS or state government, please send us a copy. This will ensure a proper and timely response and if the notice is a scam, we will be able to identify it.
