Meet Our Team

Michael P. Betters - Partner

"Each client and his or her situation is unique. I feel it is critical to spend time getting to know clients and understanding their specific needs and circumstances. In this way I can provide them with the advice that is best for them."

Michael oversees the operations of the firm he founded in 1989. His primary focus is providing consulting services to clients in the areas of business planning and budgeting, tax planning, and growth and succession planning. After conducting an evaluation of business operations, he works with management staff to improve a company’s profitability. He and his staff serve over 500 clients.

Michael has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Lake Super State College and is a Certified Management Accountant and an Accredited Tax Preparer. Michael’s is an avid big game hunter, and he has traveled globally to pursue his hobby.

Karla Betters - New Accounts and Registration Specialist

"My goal is to provide each client with the best and most accurate information available regarding registrations, payroll or sales and use tax. In doing this, I am diligent in researching needed information and triple-checking my work to ensure accuracy."

Karla has been with Betters & Associates for 19 years. She began as the sole staff member, responsible for all financial statements and payroll and sales tax preparation. In addition to retaining these duties for a number of clients, Karla has advanced into the New Accounts and Registration Specialist position at Betters & Associates. She also handles accounts receivables for the company and is responsible for invoicing and receiving payments.

In her spare time, Karla’s favorite thing to do is to travel.  She’s been across the U.S. and has visited France, China, South Africa, the Caribbean and Mexico.  She also spends a lot of time following the activities of her children, Kayla, 19 and Taylor, 17 and is currently the Treasurer of the Waukesha South Booster Club.

Jodi Buran - Accounting Department Supervisor

"I enjoy helping clients better understand their financial statements and tax returns. I also add value by teaching them to use their accounting software in a more efficient way."

Jodi joined the Betters & Associates team in 2001. She has over 17 years of experience working with QuickBooks including training, company setup and bookkeeping and accounting services. She has worked with a variety of clients, some at their location when needed. Jodi has extensive experience in preparing financial statement compilations as well as individual, corporate, non-profit and personal property tax returns.

Jodi holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, watching sports and spending time with her family and furry friends.

Angie Ligman - Senior Accountant

"If you need financial preparation at your business location, I am the person to do the job. With my professional background, I am very comfortable in any business environment. My diverse experience helps me understand what each client needs and give advice in most situations. Whatever I can't answer immediately, you can count on me to delve into the issue to find an answer for you."

Angie joined the Betters & Associates team in 2005. She has twelve years of experience in the manufacturing industry, including working with several integrated software packages, job costing and financial reporting. She provides consulting, accounting and bookkeeping services for a variety of businesses at their locations. Angie’s expertise includes preparing projections and budgets, and business planning. She is also experienced at helping companies to apply for non-profit status.

Angie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. When she is not working, Angie enjoys hiking and spending time outdoors with family, friends and her dog.

Joy Murphey - Staff Accountant

Joy joined the Betters & Associates team in 2007. She has over eight years of experience in providing paychecks for clients, preparing and filing payroll reporting forms, and filing multi-state sales tax returns. Joy prepares financial statement compilations, as well as individual, corporate, and personal property tax returns. She also provides clients with bookkeeping and accounting services in QuickBooks.

Joy has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin – Parkside. When she’s not working, she enjoys bike riding and other outdoor activities as well as spending time with family and friends.

Holly Pett - Staff Accountant

"Personal income tax returns are my specialty and my passion. If you need advice on your personal tax situation, I would love to help!"

Holly joined the Betters & Associates team in 2009. She has ten years of public accounting experience including payroll preparation and reporting for sales taxes, W-2 and 1099 forms.  Holly also has experience working in QuickBooks, personal property tax reporting and financial statement compilation. She regularly prepares corporate, partnership and non-profit tax returns, and has extensive experience in preparing individual income tax returns.

Holly has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Carroll University. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, cross-stitching, rooting for the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers and spending time with friends, family and two dachshunds.
